Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) is defined as “the intelligent management and care of individual animals in livestock systems through continuous, automated monitoring and control of production, reproduction, health, and welfare, enabling timely interventions when deviations from normal conditions are detected.” At the beginning of the program, students will gain a solid foundation in animal behavior, physiology, and the recognition of key clinical signs. This foundational knowledge is essential for understanding the principles behind PLF technologies and their application in real-world scenarios.
Students will be introduced to cutting-edge tools and techniques used to monitor animal bio-responses, including the use of cameras, microphones, wearable devices, in-body sensors, and biosensors. They will also explore integrated sensor systems designed to track both new and established key performance indicators (KPIs) related to livestock health, productivity, and welfare. A key focus of the program is on developing the ability to critically analyze and interpret data generated by real-time monitoring systems. By acquiring these skills, students will be prepared to make evidence-based decisions that enhance animal welfare, improve productivity, and promote the sustainable and efficient management of modern livestock farms.
