Valeria Vuoso

Self-presentation:

Valeria is a veterinarian specialized in Inspection of food of animal origin. She is currently affiliated with the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production of the University of Naples Federico II, where she carries out research in the field of antibiotic resistance in bivalve molluscs sampled in the Campania region. The study is framed within food safety, adopting a One Health approach.

Project:
Development of new rapid protocols for the detection of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and resistance-carrying genes in E. coli, Vibrio spp. and Salmonella spp. isolated from Campanian bivalve molluscs

WHO has recognized antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a complex problem, promoting a One Health approach that integrates human and veterinary medicine. In Italy, antibiotic resistance is among the highest in Europe, with emerging concerns for public health, especially through the consumption of contaminated food products. Bivalves, often used as bioindicators, can reflect environmental contamination by drugs. This study aims to evaluate resistance in E. coli, Vibrio spp. and Salmonella spp. isolated from shellfish. The analysis will use MALDI-TOF/MS and PCR to identify resistant bacteria, thus monitoring AMR in a One Health perspective.
