Lucrezia Borriello is a Ph.D. student at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production at the University of Naples Federico II. As part of her work, she has detected the environmental pollutants such as bisphenol A, phthalates and heavy metals in bioindicator organisms and animal-derived foods. Her research also focuses on the in vitro and/or in vivo effects of exposure to environmental pollutants and the mitigation of damage through the use of bioactive compounds from food waste.
Chemical pollution and its impact on environmental, animal and human health is an issue where interdisciplinary cooperation within the "One Health" approach is crucial. Biomonitoring of environmental contaminants offers several advantages, including the ability to monitor large areas, assess the synergistic effects of multiple contaminants and take an economic approach. In addition, the search for methods and substances capable of mitigating and/or reversing the damage caused by certain anthropogenic contaminants is of great interest to the scientific community.
