Ilaria is a PhD student in Veterinary Science currently affiliated with the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production of the University of Naples Federico II. She carries out research activities in the laboratory of Veterinary Genetics. Her PhD project focuses on the study of a DNA methylation status in healthy and sick buffaloes using nanopore technology.
Mastitis is a common and costly disease of dairy animals that causes inflammation resulting in decreased milk quality and quantity and suppressing reproductive performance of animals. For this purpose, mastitis is considered as a benchmark for defining a welfare condition in the animals. The aim of this study is to explore DNA methylation changes related to mastitis condition in Mediterranean Italian River Buffalo. In particular, the goal is to identify differentially methylated genes involved in buffalo inflammatory response and mastitis resistance. The sequencing will be performed with the Promethion device and then will be carried out the bioinformatic analysis.
