Camilla Sangiuliano

Self-presentation:

Dr. Camilla Sangiuliano is a veterinarian currently associated with the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production at the University of Naples 'Federico II.' Her research focus is on the use of diagnostic imaging ,in particular ultrasonographic evaluation, in intensive care unit.

Project:
Determination of hydration status in dogs pre- and post-fluid therapy through ultrasonographic evaluation of the aorta - vena cava relationship.

The assessment of hydration status in veterinary medicine is based on subjective clinical parameters and laboratory analyses, but these methods are not very reliable. The aorta to vena cava ratio (Ao/VCC) has been proposed as an accurate and non-invasive tool for the assessment of blood volume and hydration status in humans and subsequently in veterinary patients. To date, however, there is no standardisation of scanning methods for the vascular structures of interest. Similarly, the scientific literature is lacking in studies investigating the real clinical usefulness of the method in assessing the restoration of the physiological state of hydration after fluid therapy and the reliability and variability of the method by evaluating operators with different experience.
